Resum

Epidemiological studies provide useful knowledge on specific health problems in the community. Data derived from them are absolutely needed to develop adequate therapeutic interventions. In the present paper, the authors review the main studies that cope with pain epidemiology in the general population. The article is focused in prevalence, characteristics of pain, and therapeutic management. The main conclusions are that pain has become a social problem of great magnitude. Consequences are not only suffering for patients but also a significant economic burden for the society as a result of treatment and disabilities.
