Clinical use of topical NSAIDs

The use of topical NSAIDs is an interesting approach since it permits the treatment of many painful or inflammatory localised sites. In addition, it might avoid the classical adverse effects of these drugs, whereas the therapeutic effect is achieved. Although the chronic musculoskeletal disorders are the most frequent target of NSAIDs, it has been suggested recently that these drugs might be useful in other painful situation such as postherpetic neuralgia. In spite of its wide utilization, clear evidence of its clinical efficacy is lacking. Topical NSAIDs are safe drugs with few systemic adverse effects, although skin disorders may be observed in some cases after its use. These dermatological problems are basically, contact dermatitis and photosensitivity reactions. In conclusion, the topical route might be an interesting alternative to oral route in NSAIDs administration. However although topical NSAIDs seem to be safe, their definite clinical trials showing comparative efficacy are still lacking.
