From the 1990s onward, the governments of the United States and the European Union have embraced the agro-biofuel concept as if it were the silver bullet for solving our problems of peak oil and greenhouse gas emissions, and ever since then they have focused on the implementation of agro-biofuel production by setting specific targets and policy strategies and providing massive subsidies (World Bank, 2008; Kutas et al., 2007). However, the consequent massive production of agro-biofuel in the late 1990s and early 21st century has only contributed to a world food crisis (BBC News, 2008; Cronin, 2008; Spiegel Online International, 2008; Chakrabortty, 2008) and did not generate any economic or reliable supply of liquid fuel capable of reducing either our dependence on fossil energy or the emission of CO2 (Giampietro and Mayumi, 2009).
