Abdominal Ultrasound Assessment during Operative Hysteroscopy: A Case Series

Background: Information about the utility of ultrasound (US) guidance during complex operative hysteroscopy to prevent complications and to reduce reintervention rates has scarcely been published in the literature. Although some new evidence has shown that US-guided hysteroscopy could reduce morbidity rates and surgical expenses, the aim of this article is to present some clinical evidence about advantages of US-guided surgical hysteroscopy use during the procedure, based on case reports. Cases: This article reports on 4 cases of guided surgical hysteroscopy with abdominal US. Four different pathologies were treated endoscopically in the following situations: (1) a case of Asherman syndrome; (2) an endometrial ablation using a NovaSure® device; (3) a metroplasty; and (4) a myometrium biopsy for a suspected adenomyosis. Results: All 4 patients were operated on successfully without any complications. Conclusions: The use of US to guide blind pathways of surgical hysteroscopy could be considered in some situations to provide safer and optimal endoscopy treatment to patients although more evidence is needed.
