N2 - The purpose of this paper is to justify the well‐known relaxation spectra observed in dilute polymer solutions from extended irreversible thermodynamics. This is performed by elevating the viscous stress tensor to the status of independent variable, in addition to the usual variables, like temperature and mass density. In particular, it is shown that our thermodynamic description encompasses the Rouse and Zimm models. Memory functions for the longitudinal and transverse correlation functions are derived and analyzed within the frame work of molecular hydrodynamics. Copyright © 1989 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
