The Roman rule over Greece intensely benefited the commercial position of Athens with the cession of the control of the port of Delos, where the most part of the slave trade along the Eastern Mediterranean was centered. The profits of this trafficking of slaves produced two very well differentiated groups in Athenian society: one more traditional that relies on the support of Rome, and another, made up of some kind of new Athenians, that looked for links with Mithridates Eupator in order to eliminate their rival's monopoly on Athenian politics.
