Description

OBESITY IS CONSIDERED A MAJOR PUBLIC HEALTH PROBLEM BUT IS ALSO THE OBJECT OF WIDE SOCIAL REJECTION AND STIGMA. WEIGHT STIGMA AND WEIGHT BIAS ARE OFTEN PROPAGATED AND TOLERATED IN SOCIETY BECAUSE OF BELIEFS THAT STIGMA AND SHAME WILL MOTIVATE PEOPLE TO LOSE WEIGHT. HOWEVER, RATHER THAN MOTIVATING POSITIVE CHANGE, THIS STIGMA, ESPECIALLY WHEN IS INTERNALIZED, COULD CONTRIBUTE NEGATIVELY TO THE PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH OF PEOPLE, AND IMPAIR THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE, ESPECIALLY FOR YOUTH. THIS COULD WORSEN PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED TO OBESITY AND CREATE ADDITIONAL BARRIERS TO EFFECTIVE TREATMENT AND PREVENTION. FEW STUDIES HAVE BEEN CONDUCTED ON WEIGHT STIGMA AND WEIGHT BIAS IN OUR COUNTRY, AND STUDIES WITH ADOLESCENTS ARE SCARCE INTERNATIONALLY. IN THE FIRST STAGE OF A LONGITUDINAL STUDY, FUNDED WITH A PREVIOUS PROJECT, EXPERIENCES OF STIGMA AND WEIGHT BIAS INTERNALIZATION WERE EVALUATED IN A REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLE OF ADOLESCENTS WITH DIFFERENT WEIGHT STATUSES IN THE CITY OF TERRASSA, AS WELL AS THEIR ASSOCIATION WITH MEASURES OF PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING AND QUALITY OF LIFE. THIS PROJECT CONSISTS OF THE SECOND STAGE OF THE LONGITUDINAL STUDY, IN WHICH THE SAME COHORT OF ADOLESCENTS WHO CONTINUE TO ATTEND COMPULSORY SECONDARY EDUCATION (APPROXIMATELY 500 PARTICIPANTS) WILL BE EVALUATED TWO YEARS LATER, WITH THE AIM OF ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF HAVING HAD EXPERIENCES OF STIGMA AND/OR HIGH SCORES ON THE WEIGHT-BIAS INTERNALIZATION AT TIME ONE, IN (AFTER TWO YEARS) THE FOLLOWING OUTCOMES: (1) DISORDERED EATING; (2) PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING MEASURES OF SELF-ESTEEM, BODY DISSATISFACTION, STRESS, DEPRESSION, AND ANXIETY; (3) DIFFERENT DIMENSIONS OF HEALTH-RELATED QUALITY OF LIFE; AND (4) PERCEIVED QUALITY OF HEALTH CARE AND HEALTH CARE AVOIDANCE. WEIGHT STIGMA EXPERIENCES, WEIGHT BIAS INTERNALIZATION, DEMOGRAPHICS, REAL WEIGHT AND HEIGHT MEASUREMENTS IN ORDER TO ESTIMATE WEIGHT STATUS, AND A RANGE OF VALIDATED QUESTIONNAIRES TO ASSESS THE MAIN OUTCOMES WILL BE COLLECTED. THE STUDY HAS ALREADY BEEN SUBMITTED TO THE UAB ETHICS COMMITTEE (NUMBER SCEEAH041) AND HAS SUPPORT FROM THE COMMUNITY AND HEALTH SERVICE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF TERRASSA, WHICH GUARANTEES THE AVAILABILITY OF THE PROJECT AND CONTRIBUTE MEMBERS TO THE WORKING PLAN. THE PROJECT WILL PROVIDE DATA TO DEVELOP EFFECTIVE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT PROGRAMS TO REDUCE WEIGHT BIAS AND ITS EFFECTS AND IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF OUR ADOLESCENTS.
