Description

THE PROJECT µWAVE-SENS FOCUSES ON THE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH PERFORMANCE, LOW COST, AND SMALL-SIZED PLANAR MICROWAVE SENSORS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS IN INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENTS (E.G., MOTION CONTROL, CLEANNESS/PURITY MONITORING IN INDUSTRIAL INSTALLATIONS/PRODUCTS, QUALITY-CONTROL IN FOOD INDUSTRY, ETC.), STRUCTURAL HEALTH MONITORING (SPECIFICALLY, CORROSION IN METALLIC STRUCTURES), BIO-SENSING (E.G., FOR THE DETERMINATION OF THE CONCENTRATION OF CERTAIN BIOMARKERS, SUCH AS GLUCOSE AND ELECTROLYTES, AMONG OTHERS), AND SMART-HEALTH (E.G., FOR THE DETECTION OF URINE LEAKAGE –INCONTINENCY OR ENURESIS– THROUGH TEXTILE-BASED SENSORS). AMBITIOUS IN ITS APPLICATIONS, THE FUNDAMENTAL PROJECT GOAL IS TO INVESTIGATE NOVEL IDEAS/CONCEPTS, WORKING PRINCIPLES, STRATEGIES, AND MATERIALS/TECHNOLOGIES IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THE REQUIRED SENSOR PERFORMANCE (SENSITIVITY, RESOLUTION, LINEARITY, SELECTIVITY, ETC.) THAT THE DIFFERENT APPLICATIONS DEMAND. µWAVE-SENS IS A RESEARCH-ORIENTED PROJECT THAT PURSUES THE DEVELOPMENT OF INNOVATIVE SENSING SOLUTIONS, BASED ON MICROWAVE TECHNOLOGIES, OF APPLICATION IN VARIOUS STRATEGIC SECTORS, ALIGNED WITH THE CHALLENGES LINKED TO THE THEMATIC PRIORITIES INCLUDED IN THE PLAN ESTATAL DE INVESTIGACION CIENTIFICA. TECNICA Y DE INNOVACION 2021-2023 (PEICTI 2021-2023). THE PRIMARY THEMATIC PRIORITY OF THE µWAVE-SENS PROJECT IS DIGITAL WORLD, INDUSTRY, SPACE AND DEFENSE, WITH EMPHASIS ON THE FOLLOWING STRATEGIC LINES: (I) ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: DETERMINATION OF THE COMPOSITION IN COMPLEX STRUCTURES, MADE OF MULTIPLE COMPONENTS, E.G., GLUCOSE AND ELECTROLYTE CONTENT IN BLOOD, OR URINE, THOUGH MICROWAVE SENSORS APPLYING MACHINE LEARNING TECHNIQUES). (II) NEW MATERIALS AND FABRICATION TECHNIQUES: IMPLEMENTATION OF MICROFLUIDIC CHANNELS, OR SUBMERSIBLE SENSORS, THROUGH 3D PRINTING, THE DEVELOPMENT OF MICROWAVE ENCODERS ON MATERIALS SUCH AS RUBBER BELTS (FOR MOTION CONTROL) OR ORGANIC MATERIALS (“GREEN” CHIPLESS-RFID TAGS), AS WELL AS THE IMPLEMENTATION OF EMBROIDERED TEXTILE-BASED SENSORS (III) MODELLING AND NEW SOLUTIONS FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY: SENSORS SENSITIVITY OPTIMIZATION CONSTITUTES ONE OF THE MAIN OBJECTIVES IN THE PRESENT PROJECT. A SIGNIFICANT EFFORT WILL BE DEDICATED TO SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS (BASED ON EQUIVALENT CIRCUITS), IN ORDER TO BOOST UP THE SENSITIVITY. NEVERTHELESS, THERE ARE OTHER THEMATIC PRIORITIES WHERE THE PROJECT PROPOSAL IS ALSO ALIGNED, IN PARTICULAR HEALTH (STRATEGIC LINE OF NOVEL TECHNIQUES FOR DIAGNOSIS), IN CASE IF THE TEXTILE-BASED SENSORS AND BIOSENSORS AIMED TO DEVELOP IN THE PROJECT, AND FOOD INDUSTRY, BIO-ECONOMY, NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENT (STRATEGIC LINE SMART AND SUSTAINABLE AGRI-FOOD CHAIN), SINCE THE INTENDED SENSORS FOR DETECTING POTENTIAL DETERIORATION (AFTER USAGE) OF EDIBLE OILS, OR OTHER FOOD PRODUCTS, OR TO DETECT POTENTIAL COLD CHAIN BREAKS IN FOOD CONSUMER PRODUCTS, ARE EXPECTED TO CONTRIBUTE TO QUALITY CONTROL AND SAFETY.
