Descripció
The EUBUSINESS project investigates the impact of Next Generation EU funds on economic actors' support for the EU. The Next Generation EU funds are considered the once in a lifetime chance to emerge stronger from the pandemic and constitute one of the largest redistributive packages in the history of the Union aimed at market governance and economic transformation and growth (Economic Commission, 2023). While several studies analyse the impact of Next Generation EU funds on firm performance and growth, no study up to the date unpacks the effect of these funds on the political opinions of economic actors operating within these firms. This project aims at addressing this research gap by inquiring whether the reception of Next Generation EU funds by small and medium-sized enterprises influences employers and employees support for the European Union. The study is based on surveys and survey experiments in small and medium-sized enterprises located in Spain, Italy and Germany, the largest recipients of Next Generation EU funds, albeit characterised by differences in
socio-economic indicators and business environment. The overarching research objective of EUBUSINESS is to develop and test a novel theory that explains
how common market governance influences political system legitimation and support in the EU. The specific objectives of the project are the following:
Assess the mechanisms through which EU market governance policies, and in particular Next Generation EU funds, influence economic actors support for the EU. This research is based on a unique and comprehensive database that combines firm-level data on firm characteristics, performance, and Next Generation EU funding with original survey data of firm employees and employers political opinions and behaviour.
Examine the reverse side of market governance policies, namely their impact on economic actors whose firms are not successful in securing Next Generation EU support. This research objective is achieved by conducting survey experiments in a representative number of small and medium sized firms.
Inquire which market governance policies at the supranational level are more likely to elicit support from EU economic actors. This research objective is achieved by employing conjoint experiments in a representative number of firms in order to understand how different market consolidation policies influence economic actors policy preferences.
