Mouse-based studies are essential for the Precision Medicine, which aim to transform current medical practice to personalized healthcare. However, the scientific community lacks sufficient expertise in mouse morphological phenotyping to effectively characterize these animal models.
MorphoPHEN is a research group focused in mouse and human anatomy, histology, pathology, and imaging devoted to confirm causation of identified human disease variants as pathogenic, in particular in the area of eye diseases.
Over the next 3 years, the MorphoPHEN group will follow to validate and increase the reproducibility of mouse human disease models. Furthermore, our group want specially to increase the knowledge about the role of iron and iron handling proteins (TIM2 and H-ferritin) on the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy. In a long term, the TIM2 deficient mouse model developed in our laboratory could become a new model to test therapies against diabetic retinopathy.
